We see main service failures most often on rural Mendocino County properties where the original service was sized for a small farmhouse decades before central air, well pumps, and modern appliances existed. Signs include a scorched or corroded meter socket, an undersized weatherhead, or service conductors with cracked insulation from UV exposure over the years.
A main service upgrade replaces the conductors from the utility drop or lateral through to the main disconnect, and usually happens alongside a panel replacement since the two are directly connected. This is utility-coordinated work: PG&E has to pull the meter, and depending on whether your service is overhead or underground, we may need to open a trench for new conductors.
Everything is permitted and inspected before PG&E will reconnect power, which we schedule to minimize how long your home is without electricity.
