California fire code requires smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, interconnected so that one triggering sets off all of them, which battery-only detectors installed decades ago typically don't do. We run new low-voltage wiring where needed to interconnect hardwired units, or install wireless-interconnected models where running new wire isn't practical in a finished ceiling.
Carbon monoxide detectors are required near sleeping areas in homes with any fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage, which covers most homes with a gas water heater, furnace, or propane range common in rural Mendocino County properties without natural gas service. We also test existing hardwired units for proper interconnection and battery backup function, since we regularly find units that were installed but never actually wired to communicate with each other.
