Retrofit recessed cans, installed through existing drywall without opening the ceiling from above, are what most occupied Mendocino County homes need, while new-construction cans get used during remodels when the ceiling is already open. Any can going into an insulated attic must be IC-rated (insulation contact rated) to prevent overheating against attic insulation, which is a common code violation we find in older DIY installs using non-IC housings.
We plan spacing based on ceiling height and beam width to avoid uneven light pools, and route wiring through the attic or wall cavity to a dimmer-compatible switch if you want that control. Vaulted or older plaster ceilings sometimes require additional planning since there's less clearance and different mounting hardware.
